Expected Results After Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair Transplant surgery has become very popular in the past few years among men and women suffering from hair loss, The results of the hair restoration surgery varies from person to person. It depends on many factors. The two factors that are important to be considered is the degree of hair loss and the amount of donor hair available. These factors should be discussed in detail with the hair restoration surgeon before considering hair transplant surgery as an option.

The amount of coverage and density depends on the extent of baldness and patient's donor density. During the consultation with hair restoration specialist, an evaluation of hair loss is performed and a recommendation with detailed plan of the overall coverage, the progression of hair loss, donor availability and the number of procedures required to give a natural result should be discussed. Once the patient's agrees on the plan then, they can proceed to the procedure.

Once the procedure is performed according to the comprehensive plan, then the waiting begins. Usually within approximately one month, much of the transplanted hair is shed. In about three months, the hair begins to grow and continues to grow at a normal rate. About six months after the hair transplant session, the transplanted hairs begin to take on a natural appearance and will continue to grow. It may take up to 18 months for all the transplanted hair to grow in. The donor site which the hair was harvested using either FUE or FUT technique will continue to heal and is well hidden with the surrounding hair. Once the hair growth process is complete, the hair restoration specialist and the patient can decide if additional procedure is necessary.

Corrective and Reconstructive Hair Transplant Surgery

It is a fact that hair transplants of yesterday appear nothing like today's modern hair transplants. The older hair transplants using larger punches have a doll like look with clumpy and straight hair distribution which makes it very unnatural. fortunately with the modern hair transplant techniques these older transplants can be corrected to meet today's standards.

A number of approaches are available for reconstructing and repairing hair transplants of the past. At Our Orange county and Los angles hair restoration clinics, we use the best and latest hair transplant techniques using FUE and FUT hair transplant harvesting to revise the old hair transplant. A good hair restoration surgeon will examine the patient's scalp to determine the best hair transplant approach for revisions. In some cases, the optimal approach is to do a hairline revision using single hair grafts irregularly in front of the old hairline. In other cases it may be more beneficial to remove some of the old plugs before inserting single hair units and rebuilding the hair line. Follicles and hairs that are removed from the old hair transplant that are in good condition, can be separated into follicular units or single hair grafts and used for re-transplantation.

To perform hair line revisions, it is important to consider patient's age and progression of hair loss in the future. A low placement of hair line for reconstruction or rebuilding a new hair line may be inappropiate for patient's age and thus result in an unnatural look. Therefore, hairline revision must be preformed by an experienced hair restoration surgeon. The new modern hair restoration techniques using FUE hair transplant and FUT hair transplant can result in best hair restoration with very natural results. These kinds of revisions can be used on patients who have hair loss as a result of accident, surgery, burn, and trauma to the scalp.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist with offices in Los Angeles and Orange County, Beverly Hills, Irvine and San Diego offers many advises to his clients for reconstructive hair restoration surgery using the best hair transplant techniques.

What is a comprehensive approach to hair loss?

Some consider the hair to be the most aesthetic part of the face and as such hair loss can be psychologically very devastating.  A primary reason for seeking hair restoration is to restore your appearance to the condition before hair loss. Before making a decision for hair restoration options, it is best to get evaluated by a qualified hair restoration specialist to find the most comprehensive approach to address your hair loss concerns.

During the initial consultation, the physician should spend considerable amount of time to educate the patient utilizing computerized hair analysis to evaluate extent of hair loss, hair characteristics, hair density and the cause of hair loss.  Once the cause of hair loss is determined, the doctor can give recommendations based on patient's age, goal and expectation, patient's state of health, the degree of hair loss, donor size, donor density, hair characteristics, whether or not previous surgery have been done and the progression of future hair loss.  The hair transplant specialist should give all the necessary information and educate the patient about both surgical and medical treatment options that may be beneficial to the client.

Since hair loss tends to be both gradual and progressive, it is often wise to combine a surgical and medical treatment regiment routine to get the most optimal result.  Medical treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil are usually recommended to help preserve thinning hair.  Hair transplants can be used to fill in the frontal hairline and thicken the mid scalp and the crown areas while medical treatments can be used to maintain the native hair and possibly enhance the long term results of hair restoration surgery.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients for hair line and forehead lowering surgery.  If hair loss is genetic, then hair transplant can be an option to restore the hair that is lost and medical treatment is used to prevent future hair loss and keep hair healthy.

Can hair transplant be used for hair line lowering?

Hair transplant surgery has become very popular among men and women in the past few years. There are many celebrities that have done hair transplant to reshape their face with optimal results. However to get the best result first the cause for the hair loss has to be determined and to find out if the client is a good candidate for surgery.

Hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure and like any other cosmetic procedure the result mostly depends on the experience and the artistry of the hair transplant surgeon. Once you have decided to do hair restoration for your hairline lowering, it is of utmost importance to find a qualified hair transplant surgeon and the right technique. You should first be evaluated by a hair restoration specialist to find out if your hair loss is progressive and if lowering hairline using hair transplant can be beneficial to you.

Once you are evaluated by a specialist, It is critical to know the facts about the cause of your hair loss, the current hair replacement surgery options and the technique used for both the recipient and the harvesting areas. New methods of surgical hair restoration can replace the lost hair in the forehead and reshape the hairline with your own natural, growing hair requiring no more care than the ordinary washing, styling, and trimming. However the natural look depends on the artistry and experience of the hair transplant doctor. The best hair line recreated by hair transplantation is one that is natural and blends with other facial features. It is important for the qualified hair transplant surgeon to use latest customized needles for dense packing in the frontal hair line and make the correct incisions following one's own direction and orientation of the native hair to get the most natural result. Hairline restoration can be done so well that often a barber or hair stylist can not even tell that hair transplant procedure has been done.

Cosmetic Hair care Products for thinning hair

Cosmetic hair care products for grooming and styling can help improve one's image and life style. They can change your look, reshape your face and thereby make you look younger. There are many shampoos and conditioners in the market that claim to make the hair look fuller and younger. Most of these products claim to make the hair shaft look healthier and improve the overall appearance of the hair.

The major characteristics of the hair shaft that effects its function and and appearance are elasticity, texture, and porosity. Hair shaft has three major chemical bonds, disulfide bonds, hydrogen bonds and salt bonds. These characteristics will effect the permeability of the hair to the hair care products such as shampoos and conditioners.

There are many shampoos and conditioners that are in the market and claim to help with hair loss. Some of these shampoos are intended to remove the excess oil from the hair and scalp, reduce the number of bacteria and other microorganisms that live on the hair and scalp, and cleanse the hair from dirt and dead skin cells. Conditioners should be used after shampooing to facilitate more vibrant, more manageable hair ready for styling. Some of the leave in conditioners cover the hair shaft with a thin coating of a polymer, which temporarily repairs hair shafts and eliminates static electricity as a styling problem. They may contain hydrolyzed protein which thickens and strengthens the hair shaft, repairs split ends and damaged hair.

Finding the right hair care products is only one factor of proper hair care. If one suffers from genetic hair loss, hair care products can be used to minimize damage to the hair shafts and scalp but do not have any effect on the follicles. A more comprehensive medical hair loss regiment should include treatment for both the scalp, hair shaft and hair follicle.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients to start hair loss prevention when they notice thinning at the initial stages. It is important to keep hair healthy by using the right hair care products. If hair loss is genetic, then hair transplant can be an option to restore the hair that is lost and medical treatment is used to prevent future hair loss and keep hair healthy.

What is the cost for hair transplant procedure?

What is the cost for hair transplant procedure?

It depends on where you have it done , the technique for harvesting and the number of grafts and the experience of the hair transplant doctor. There are many other factors that also effect the cost of hair transplant procedure, one of which is the degree of patient's hair loss. The donor hair has to be examined the donor availability and the degree of hair loss help establish the surgery session size and the actual price range. The donor hair has to be examined to determine the amount of quality donor hair that can be safely harvested.

Most hair restoration practices charge an average price per graft for the harvested donor hair per session. That average price per graft is impacted by the type of harvesting technique the patient chooses to have, whether it is FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) Strip, or FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). In addition, there are clinics over seas that use just medical assistant to perform the whole procedure and doctor is not involved. This will not only effect the outcome of the procedure, but also the cost. It is best to research the expertise of the doctor, the doctor's involvement during the procedure, the number of hair as well as the number of grafts, and the harvesting method. All these factors are the determining factors in the actual cost for the surgical hair restoration.

Now, more than ever before, surgical hair restoration is affordable. Typical procedures on average at a reputable clinic for hair transplant in the Los angles area is about $7000 for FUT and $10,000 for FUE. To help plan financially, there are different financing programs available and some clinics may even offer seasonal discounts.

While cost may be a driving factor in your decision, you have to make sure you are getting quality care for your money spent. At Meshkin Medical hair transplant clinics in the Los angles areas, we offer free initial consultation. To find out about the procedure, and the cost you can visit meshkinmedical.com or call us at (949)219-0027. During the consult all the determining factors for the final cost is discussed.

What are the top hair loss questions?

There are many frequently asked questions that are usually asked for hair loss.
Here is a few questions and the answers to your questions.

Q: Does too much washing or frequent combing cause hair loss?
A: Most people notice lost hair when in the shower or in their comb. This is a temporary physiological hair loss. Usually, these are hairs that are near the end of normal telogen phase, and losing up to 100 hairs per day is normal. Frequent combing and shampooing usually does not cause hair loss.

Q: Does wearing a hat cause hair loss?
A: If the hat is too tight and it is used too often, it can cause hair loss by rubbing against the scalp. Tight hats or a helmet can cause mechanical trauma from outside but they don’t interfere with oxygen or blood circulation to the follicles. If the hat is loose and used occasionally, it should not be a problem.

Q: Does shaving the head reduce hair loss?
A: Hair follicles are about 1/4 of an inch deep into the skin. Shaving will cut the shaft of the hair at the surface and has no patho-physiological effect on hair growth or hair loss. However, if the hair has been damaged due to chemicals, diseases, chemo or radiation therapy, shaving may help psychologically until the underlying problems are resolved.

Q: Does crash dieting cause hair loss?
A: Crash diets and caloric deprivation of less than 1,000 calories per day or sudden weight loss of more than 20 pounds have been reported to be associated with hair loss. The evidence of hair shedding can be noticed one month after the diet begins.

Q: Is my medical condition contributing to my hair loss?
A: Although there are many causes of hair loss; in general if you are in good health you will have healthier hair, and if you are in poor physical and mental condition (such as illness, stress and malnutrition) your hair and scalp will show it. Treating the underlying medical condition with proper relaxation, good nutrition and proper hair care are the key factors for maintaining a healthy scalp and hair.

Q: Can grey hair be transplanted?
A: The answer is yes. Grey hair can be transplanted as safely and successfully as hair of any color. Transplantation of grey hair is will grow in the same color grey but it will be grow normally.

hairline lowering, design and planning

Some consider hair to be the most aesthetic part of the face. As such when ones' #hair starts to thin and #hairline recedes it can have a profound effect on a face. The hairline is where the scalp hair borders the forehead and frames the face, thereby bringing out the the beauty and richness of one's facial features. When the hairline starts to recede the facial features also recede into the background. One of the primary reasons to seek #hairtransplants is to restore the appearance to the condition before hair loss recedes.

One of the critical decisions in #hairrestoration is determining where your new hairline should be placed. This should be discussed with your hair transplant doctor in detailed and be planned out before the procedure. The best hairline recreated by #hair transplant is one that is natural and blends with other facial features. The hair transplant specialist should take into account many factors. These include: facial contour, ethnicity, gender, age, hair characteristics, type of donor hair selected and patient's desires and expectations.

An experienced hair transplant surgeon should discuss the hair line placement with the client ahead of the surgery. The surgeon should follow several cosmetic rules to design the hair line. The overall technique, size of the incisions in the recipient area, selection and distribution of the grafts should be planned out to address all the above factors to ensure a natural result. The widows peak, correct flaring, forelock creation, random pattern, natural orientation, combination incisions are all important for establishing aesthetically pleasing hairline.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients about their hair restoration options, hairline lowering, hairline design and plans out hair transplant procedures to give the most natural result.

What to expect during and after hair transplant procedure?

Hair transplantation is a very safe, and relatively minor surgical procedure. Hair transplant is an outpatient procedure which is usually performed under local anesthesia while the patient is watching T.V, listening to music or sleeping. If the procedure is done by an experienced hair restoration physician, there will be minimal discomfort and rarely any complications.

On the day of the surgery, the doctor will spend time reviewing the procedure and addressing any concerns or questions. After all the necessary measurements are taken, the physician will evaluate the hair quality and quantity for the transplantation. It is critical to plan the harvesting of the grafts from the donor area and the design of the recipient area. Following these standard procedures, the physician will proceed with the surgery.

Hair restoration surgery first involves the removal or harvesting the hair from the donor area. Following the removal of the donor hair, the harvested hair is dissected into 1-3 hair units under high powered microscopes. As the units are being prepared, the physician will make small incisions into the recipient area using customized needles. The possibility of future hair loss has to be considered and lateral incisions should be made following clients own hair directions and hair orientation. Once the incisions are made, follicular units are implanted into the recipient areas. At the end of the procedure, a light dressing may be applied which can be removed the next day.

Following the procedure, one can expect to have small crusts formed on the grafted area. A post operative cleaning regiment is given to the client to help dissolve the scabs. These crusts will flake off by 7-10 days after the surgery. The client can usually return to normal activity in about two weeks. The transplanted hair growing from the scalp may initially shed, however the roots will remain and new hair will start to grow in after three months.

What are the possible causes of hair loss in women?

What are the possible causes of hair loss in women?

Hair loss patterns in women are typically different from those in men. Hair loss in women tends to be more diffuse than hair loss in men. The most characteristic female pattern is diffuse thinning over an area of the scalp, or over the central area of the scalp. There are different cause for thinning in women one of most common is the Androgenic Alopecia.

In general, there are three patterns of hair loss in female androgenic alopecia. One is thinning in the central scalp, the other is hair loss in the front of the scalp and also patches in overall mid-scalp area. However, although androgenic alopecia is a frequent cause of hair loss in women, it is one of number of causes to be considered.

Conditions other than androgenic alopecia that are frequent causes of hair loss in women include hormonal changes that may be associated with menopause, hypo or hyperthyroidism, and polycystic overian syndrome. Hair loss associated with these conditions can be halted or reversed if it is adequately diagnosed and treated. Also unexplained localized or generalized patches of hair loss may also be due to a condition such as Alopeica Areata and Alopecia Totalis that require proper medical attention and diagnosis.

Other causes of hair loss in women that are not genetic or related to a medical condition may be as a result of hair breakage. Common causes of hair breakage include over treatment with hair straighteners, relaxers, permanent waving and frequent dyeing. In addition hair styling that features corn rowing or tight braiding can result in the condition called traction hair loss. Constant traction on hair follicles can damage the hair and cause permanent hair loss.

Proper diagnosis of hair loss in women is the key for treatment options. If unusual hair loss begins and it continues, consultation with a physician or hair restoration specialist should be considered. During the consultation, the doctor can determine both the cause of hair loss and th best approach for treatment. Hair transplantation can be one of treatment options for female pattern hair loss. Both the patient and the physician should be confident of the cause of hair loss before hair transplantation is considered.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients about the causes of #hairloss in women and #hairtransplant procedures.

PRP and Acell as Non-surgical treatment option for hair loss?

There are different treatments for hair loss that are available in the market. One treatment option that has gained popularity specially among women is PRP and Acell. PRP or the Plasma Rich Platelet injections is considered a nonsurgical treatment option that is used either in combination with hair transplant, or Acell injection in some cases.

PRP is a concentration derived from clients' own blood. It has growth factors that stimulate hair growth when injected into the scalp. Not all PRP for hair loss is created equal. When it comes to stopping hair loss, a 5-10 times concentration of platelets is best. Achieving this concentration requires more sophisticated and expensive technology than a simple centrifuge. Depending on the intended use, PRP may or may not contain red or white blood cells. However, PRP contains a concentration of platelets that is higher than one's own blood.

Once in the scalp, PRP growth factors begin to degrade quickly so any benefit to thinning hair will be short lived and usually minimal. Therefore, this requires continuous treatments of the PRP injections . As a rule most doctors that offer PRP recommend that it be repeated 2-3 times a year to maintain any benefit. It is also suggest increased benefit if it is combined with ACell  injections.

ACell is a protein matrix that when injected into the scalp recruits the body’s own intrinsic growth factors and healing proteins over a period of several months. It is suggested that the combination of ACell and PRP provide a continuous supply of growth factors to the native hair follicles for several months. The combined treatment of highly concentrated PRP and Acell is suggested improved hair growth over time. Repeated treatments are necessary and the results are not guaranteed.

P.R.P is considered a nonsurgical treatment and clinical studies about its effectiveness and long term results are not conclusive or scientifically proven. One can either blindly accept the claims these products make or you can approach them with some skepticism to discern the treatment's reliability. It is always good to look for documented proof or scientific studies on any medical treatment option. FDA approval is one way to discern whether the product in fact been studied and proved that it has stimulated hair growth in a majority of persons using it in a safe manner with minimal side effects.

At meshkin medical clinics all viable options for hair loss are discussed with the client. The treatment is customized based on the cause, degree of hair loss and clients needs and concerns.

Can Cosmetic products help with hair loss?

Can cosmetic products help with hair loss ?

For some patients with severe hair loss, cosmetic products can be the only viable option. These products are the only available option for those who have a strong family history of hair loss, and aggressive male pattern hair loss that began early. #Hair transplantation may never be an option for such a patient, who will eventually have no hair from which to transplant.

Cosmetic Products that can help treat hair loss are creams, colored sprays, and powders that help to camouflage thinning areas, as long as there is some hair present. They do not treat the hair loss process. Hairpieces have also been worn throughout time as a means of covering up bald spots and giving the appearance of fuller hair. The most common hairpieces are glue adhesive, weave attachments and clips. It is important to note that hairpieces require monthly maintenance and should be replaced regularly.

It is important to research these products thoroughly before using them. There are many undocumented “miracle cures” that have circulated the market since the 19th century. One of these recent options is PRP or plasma rich platelet treatment which is offered as an option at some clinics. There is no scientific proof that it can help with treatment of hair loss. One can either blindly accept the claims these products make or you can approach them with some skepticism to discern the treatment's reliability. It is always good to look for documented proof or scientific studies on products or any medical treatment option.

Any advantage in using ARTAS and NeoGraft VS. other hair transplant techniques?

There are two different techniques in harvesting hair from the donor area. One is the strip method or FUT and the other is the punch method or FUE. Basically, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a revival of the old punch technique obtaining donor hair with a small circular cutting instrument. While ARTAS and Neograft are aggressively being promoted to the public as the superior technique for performing hair transplants, they work by actually performing the extraction of hair grafts through the FUE technique. These two devises are different instruments used in the market to do FUE extraction siding punches to harvest follicular units one at a time from the donor area for harvesting the grafts.

Neograft was introduced about 5 years ago, and is a machine that a physician or a technician uses to perform the follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure. Neograft has done tremendous amount of marketing in the past years to present itself as a new technique in hair transplantation. However, it is simply not a new technique but a machine that is used to harvest grafts from the donor site. These machines are usually used and sold to physicians who have never done a hair transplant and have no experience in any aspects of hair transplantation. Usually Neograft appears on a long list of other procedures that a doctor performs, and it is likely that the surgeon is not specialized in hair transplant and is doing it as a side job. It has a motorized hand held circular punch that is attached to a suction tube. Its large circular tip contributes to collateral damage of the surrounding hair and some burial of the grafts during the extraction stage. It is more reliant on a human to extract the hair from the donor site. Therefore, most Neograft doctors hire a Neograft technician to perform the procedure not only in the harvesting part but also to oversee the design and incision making of the recipient sites. This means that minimal input is required of the surgeon into both harvesting and making the incisions for the recipient area. It should be noted that the involvement of an experienced and specialized hair transplant doctor is critical in terms of achieving natural appearing results.

ARTAS is also another machine that utilizes computer technology to guide the device in the removing of each graft by itself. It is used to extract hair from the donor site using the FUE technique. It facilitates the extraction stage of the FUE, however it is associated with graft burial during this stage. Due to its larger tip, there may be some collateral damage to the surrounding hairs as well, which will limit the number of hair available for extraction in the donor area. This larger tip also contributes to larger circular scaring in the donor area. This machine also ensures minimal involvement of the physician in the harvesting of the grafts.

Both of these machines have some advantages in that they help speed up the graft extraction process in the FUE technique. However, the use of these devices does not assure an aesthetic result. Like all other cosmetic procedure, hair transplantation results are largely dependent on the design, distribution and the artistic ability of the hair transplant specialist. Donor harvesting whether using Neograft or ARTAS is one part of hair transplant surgery, the other part is the design and graft distribution into the recipient site. The extraction of the hair from the donor area has nothing to do with how the hair will look in the recipient area. The recipient area is another aspect of the hair transplant that should be discussed and planed out in detail before moving forward with the procedure. So it is very important to choose an experienced doctor both for harvesting of the grafts and also for design and placement of grafts to the recipient area and discuss the options in detail to ensure optimal result that would meet your expectations.

How much discomfort is associated with hair transplant?

How much discomfort is associated with hair transplant?

One of frequently asked questions is the degree of discomfort during and after hair transplant. Generally, many people express little to no pain felt during the procedure. Some mild discomfort is typical as the anesthetic is injected, but once the area is numb there is virtually no pain. Should the numbing medicine wear off during the procedure, more anesthesia is injected to make the patient comfortable. Surgical hair restoration actually results in less operative discomfort than many other surgical procedures. The first night following the procedure, medication is prescribed to relieve any discomfort if necessary. Most people do not feel pain or discomfort one or two days following the procedure and can return to work right away. In general most people return to their normal routine after one week following the procedure.

At Meshkin Medical hair restoration clinics, Dr. Meshkin uses combinations of medications and newest techniques to make the procedure very comfortable and almost pain free. Most of the clients are either watching a movie or sleep during the entire procedure. Almost all of his patients are amazed at the level of comfort they experience during this surgery.

Beard Transplant, Can it be done?

Beard transplant, can it be done?

As the popularity of ‪#‎hairtransplant‬ to the scalp increases, a lot of people are also inquiring about other body parts for transplant. One area of interest is the ‪#‎beardtransplant‬ in men. They often ask if it is even possible?
It is possible to do beard transplant, and in the hands of a ‪#‎hairrestoration‬specialist in can be very successful.

The purpose of transplantation of hair to the beard area is to recreate the beard in a natural contour, orientation and to increase the density. At Meshkin Medical clinics, we work with each patient to outline the beard area to conform to the natural symmetry of the patient’s face. Depending on the size of the area to be transplanted, more than one transplant session may be required; two sessions several months apart are common.

Donor hair for the transplant is taken from the donor zone in the back of the head using ‪#‎FUE‬ or ‪#‎FUT‬ techniques. Donor hair is prepared under the microscope into ultra refined units of one to two hairs. Very fine incisions are made using customized needles and done following the natural orientation and direction of ones own hair. The grafts are then placed into the prepared incisions. The use of single and two hair grafts permits adherence to the beard contour for a natural appearance. The post op care in very minimal and there is very minor discomfort involved.

How to select the best hair transplant doctor?

How to select the best hair transplant doctor?

With the popularity of hair transplant surgery, many doctors who are not experienced in this field are starting to offer this service. Most doctor who offer Hair transplant do not do hair transplant on full time basis.   Since hair transplant is very specialized, if they are not set up for hair transplant you will not get a quality service. With today’s highly sophisticated techniques such as highly Refined Micro-scopic Follicular Unit transplantation, it is of utmost importance to make a careful selection of the doctor and his/her staff. A person should consider a doctor who is well experienced and is in all surgical techniques for the benefit of his patients.  It is important that the doctor does hair transplant on a full time basis and not as a side job. If it is not done correctly, the donor hair will be wasted, the transplanted hair will not grow and the client may be left with big scar.

There are many aspects to hair transplant one Being the harvesting. Just as important as harvesting is a customized plan for the recipient site.  For the most natural look a plan should be customized in the design, preparation of recipient area, the needles used to make the sites, the angels and the orientation of the recipient sites, the preparation of the grafts under the microscope and placement of the grafts. A specialized hair transplant doctor should make the plan customized to fit the patients needs and concerns.  A hair transplant doctor should have  full time surgical staff to help him with all aspects of the hair transplant.  You have to make sure that the doctor and the staff have formal training, experience and have highly developed surgical skills and qualifications to do the hair transplant. If they are not doing hair transplant on full time basis, then you may not be getting the best quality of care for your hair transplant.  So to get the best hair transplant result, it is important to ask questions, and do your research, and chose a doctor with experience and a track record of quality work.

When choosing a doctor for hair transplant, it is important to see before and after photos and the number of graft used in each case to get familiarized with the doctor's overall plan and ability. It is also important to not only find out about the number of grafts used but also the total number of hairs used and how the units were divided and distributed.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients about the #hairtransplant procedures.  He has been doing #hairrestoration procedures exclusively for the past twenty five years.  With his many years of experience and artistic ability, he is able to give the best result with the most natural look.

How to estimate the number of grafts needed for a procedure

How do doctors estimate the number of grafts for a procedure?

There are two ways to estimate how much #hair is sufficient for the degree of hair loss, and each doctors estimate may be different. Depending on how a doctor chooses to divide up the one, two or three hair grafts, you may get same number of hairs but different number of grafts. For example with 4500 grafts at one clinic you may get 7500 hairs because the break down is 2000 one hair graft 2000 two hair graft and 500 three hair grafts. At another clinic with 3500 grafts you may get 7500 hairs with 1000 one hair 1000 two hair and 1000 three hair grafts and yet another clinic may divide up all the hairs into 7500 one hair units and charge for 7500 graft. how much each doctor harvests from the back is the same, but how they divide and distribute is different. This division and distribution totally depends on the experience, design and the artistic ability of the doctor. It also effects the total cost for the procedure as many clinics total cost depends on the total number of grafts.

To make it more tangible, you can imagine a large pizza. You can divide it into four slices or twenty smaller slices. But the large pizza is the same size in both cases. same with hair transplant. Once the hair is harvested the total number of hair is the same but it can be divided in to smaller units or larger units. With smaller units you get more number of grafts and therefore the cost is more. With larger units, you get less number of grafts and the cost is less. It is the doctors' artistic ability to come up with a combination of units that both make it look natural and give enough density.

When choosing a doctor for hair transplant, it is important to see before and after photos and the number of graft used in each case to get familiarized with the doctor's overall plan and ability. It is also important to not only find out about the number of grafts used but also the total number of hairs used and how the units were divided and distributed.

Is hair transplant safe in unregulated countries?

Hair Transplant in unregulated countries
Hair Transplant in unregulated countries
There are some people that are willing to travel to unregulated countries to have hair transplant or other cosmetic surgical procedures for the cost. Unfortunetly due to unregulatory environment and low cost you are lucky to get good result.
The hair transplant has to be taken from an area from the back of the head called the donor zone . The donor hair in the donor zone is limited and has to be handled with utmost care. There many detailed factors that are involved in hair transplantation both in the harvesting of the grafts and in the incisions in the recipient area. If any one of those details are not done correctly, then the implanted hair will not grow, and your donor hair is wasted and you are left with a scar. The presence of a medical doctor is the key ingredient to assure that all the steps are done properly and prevent complications.
In many cases these clinics are run by non medical staff and there are no doctors present during the procedure. In some cases, the doctor only shows up for the initial design. During the procedure, many of the clinics use only assistants without any medical training to do the whole procedure including, cutting, harvesting, incisions, and placements. These skills require many years of surgical training and experience to be performed properly. If any of the steps is compromised, not only will it effect the outcome of hair transplant procedure, it may cause serious problems for the patient.
If your decision is just based on the cost and you are willing to take the risk then having hair transplant at an unregulated country could be for you. But before choosing a clinic for your transplant procedure, do research and find a quality clinic with experienced doctor who is present during the procedure to be sure that the proper care is taken. Ask questions about the doctor's experience, background and affiliations to any medical organizations. You need to make sure that the doctor and its staff have proper training to do the procedure.  If you do proper research you may find a quality clinic in the states that would meet your expectations and have reasonable cost that is close to your budget. Remember If the cost is the only factor, whatever you pay for a bad transplant is way too much.

What Drugs help with hair loss and what are the side effects

What drugs help with hair loss and what are the side effects?

There are two FDA approved drugs that may help maintain hair and help with hair loss. These are Propecia and Minoxidil. There are no known harmful effects of either medication when used as directed by the manufacturer. You should follow all package instructions and consult with a doctor.

It is helpful to get familiar with side effects. For example one of the side effects could be rapid loss of hair with discontinuation of these medications.  The hair that was saved with the use of these medications would be lost until the point where an individual would have been without treatment. However, this process is not sudden and will take several months after stopping the medications. Missing a day or two of treatment, while not recommended, is generally not harmful.

Propecia could be harmful to a developing male fetus in a pregnant woman if the drug entered her body by ingesting the medication. The amounts of drug in a male’s semen have been studied and found to be insignificant. The man can choose to stop treatment during conception efforts, but it is not necessary. Minoxidil may cause palpitation, irritation and dizziness, so you need to consult your physician before using the medications and to be safe find out about the side effects before using them.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients to start hair loss prevention when they notice thinning at the initial stages. Cost of Hair transplant

Determining the cost of your hair transplant procedure depends on the degree of hair loss. There are many factors that effect the cost. Your donor hair has to be examined to determine the amount of quality donor hair that can be safely harvested. The donor availability and the degree of hair loss help establish the surgery session size and the actual price range. Most hair restoration practices charge an average price per graft for the harvested donor hair per session. That average price per graft is impacted by the type of procedure you choose to have, whether it is FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) Strip, or FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). In addition, there are clinics that use just medical assistant to perform the whole procedure and doctor is not involved. This will not only effect the outcome of the procedure, but also the cost. All these factors are combined to determine the actual cost for your surgical hair restoration.

Now, more than ever before, surgical hair restoration is affordable. Typical procedures at our clinic range from $3,500 to $10,000, depending on the number of grafts and the technique used to harvest the grafts. To help you plan financially, we have different seasonal discounts available.

While cost may be a driving factor in your decision, you have to make sure you are getting quality care for your money spent. However, if the cost is the only factor, whatever you pay for a bad hair transplant is way too much.

Causes of hair loss and treatment options for younger patients

Currently in the USA, approximately 50 million men and women are affected by some type of hair loss. One of the most distressing forms of hair loss is Hereditary Androgenic Alopecia, also known as male pattern hair loss (MPHL). The symptoms of this genetically predetermined disorder include physical changes in the hair, including loss of normal vigor and elasticity. Eventually, the hair can become thin and brittle and begin to fall out. In a genetically prone man, the presence of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is necessary for this problem to occur.

Some of the less common causes of hair loss that are reversible with treatment, include: thyroid disease, iron deficiency, high fever, surgery or general anesthesia, “crash diets,” stress and certain medications. There are also certain dermatologic scalp disorders that can result in temporary or permanent hair loss, such as lupus, lichen planopilaris, and alopecia areata.

In general patients younger than 23 years old suffering from hair loss, hair transplantation is not an option. Most hair transplant specialist prefer to wait until a more definite diagnosis is established. Some doctors recommend doing miniturization studies to establish the cause of hair loss as MPHL, however these studies are not definite. Since in some cases hair loss is not permanent, one needs to be patient and not jump into conclusion. At this point, it is to patients' advantage to visit a hair restoration specialist to begin some sort of preventive medical regiment. Sometimes, as a result of using theses regiments you can decrease degree of future hair loss and patients may even get some hair back. In a few years, if hair loss is genetic and patient continues to lose hair and a more definite diagnosis is established, hair transplantation is a treatment option.

Dr. Mike Meshkin, a hair transplant specialist based in Los Angeles and Orange County offers many advises to his clients to start hair loss prevention when they notice thinning at the initial stages. It is important to keep hair healthy by eating the right food and proper vitamins for support. What are the different aspects to hair transplant procedure?

What are the different aspects when choosing best hair transplant technique?

There are two procedural aspects to hair transplantation. One is the harvesting of the grafts from the donor area and the other is the design, distribution and placement of the units into the recipient area. These are two different aspects. FUT and FUE only refer to the harvesting technique from the donor area and have nothing to do with the recipient area aspect of transplantation. The recipient areas technique is based mostly on the surgical, experience and artistic skills of the physician.
Basically, in Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), the hair for relocation is obtained by surgically excising a strip of hair bearing skin from the donor region of the scalp. The skin edges of this wound are then sutured closed. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a revival of the old punch technique obtaining donor hair with a small circular cutting instrument. These punches are used to harvest follicular units one at a time from the donor area. Each harvest or extraction creates a small circular scar. The difference is with the strip you get a continuous linear scar, whereas with punches you get discontinuous, round circular scars. You get a better Yield with FUT technique because one can see the follicles when excising the strip whereas in FUE it's a blind extraction from the skin. Due to the blind extraction, there may be damage to the hair follicle and also collateral damage to the surrounding hairs. Therefore, it is likely that when hair is transplanted to the recipient area in case of FUE technique some of the hairs be damaged and therefore either not growin or grow thinner. Also if the hair is not harvested from any where but the safe donor zone, the chances are those hair will be lost in the near future and are not permanent. These pros and cons should be discussed in detail before making a decision as to which harvesting technique is best for the patient before the procedure.
On the other hand for the recipient area design and technique, a good specialized hair transplant doctor should know how to distribute the units, where to place the hair line, which needles to use, how to angle the needles, and the orientation of the incisions in the recipient area. These are just a few things to consider when making the incisions in the recipient area. These options should be customized to meet patients needs. Therefore, it is very important to chose an experienced doctor both for harvesting of the grafts and also for design and placement of grafts to the recipient area and discuss the options in detail to make sure it meets your concerns and expectations.

Hair loss in women, is it genetic or environmental?

Over the past ten years there is alarming increase in number of women that suffer from hair loss.  The question has been asked if the female pattern hair loss is genetic or is there other issues that cause this increase.  There has been studies that shows Androgenetic Alopecia, which is an inherited condition, causing hair loss in women.  However, Genetic Female pattern hair loss does not follow the same patterns characteristic of Androgentic Alopecia causing hair loss in men.  So is there Other issues that may cause Female Pattern Hair loss.

In general, there are three patterns of hair loss in female androgenic alopecia.  There is the thinning in the central scalp, there is thinning hair and patches of greater scalp hair loss and there is male pattern style of hair loss that rarely progresses tot eh extensive balding characteristic of hair loss in men.  Dr. Meshkin explains that " although male and female pattern hair loss both have genetic causes, different genes may be involved or the functioning of hair loss genes may be different in men and women, causing different pattern characteristics in each."

Other issues may cause hair loss in women.  Frequent cause of hair loss in women other than genetic, include hormonal changes, hypo or hyper Thyroidism, Polycystic Overian syndrome, hair breakage, constant traction, Alopecia Areata and unexplained hair loss.  To make sure that there is no underlying medical condition causing hair loss consultation with a physician is recommended.  A hair loss specialist can determine both the cause of hair loss and the best approach for treatment.

Some women suffering from hair loss can benefit from hair transplantation.  The procedure has a high rate of success in women and the great majority of women are very satisfied with the results.  However, not all women are good candidates for hair transplantation. In those cases medical regiments, certain shampoos, conditioners, laser therapy, and vitamins may be considered. A hair loss specialist will be able to do the evaluations and give the best treatment option that are most beneficial depending on the cause and degree of hair loss.

Dr. Meshkin is a hair loss specialist with more than 20 years of experience in treating both female ands male hair loss.  He is recognized internationally as an hair transplant surgeon and educator on hair loss and hair loss treatment.
